 About the Department

 Message from the Director
New Mexico is a state which counts on culture. As communities across our nation and world become increasingly homogenous, New Mexico stands out as a unique cultural landscape...a spirited blend of arts, history, and lifeways found in few other places.

New Mexico's cultural treasures — museums, visual and performing arts, Indian pueblos, community festivals, libraries, historic buildings, and archaeological sites — contribute enormously to the value of our daily lives.

Cultural efforts provide educational and creative opportunities for people of all ages, enhance quality of life, contribute to the well-being of our communities, and serve as a magnet for economic development.

With this dramatic impact in mind, it's no wonder that the people of New Mexico place so much emphasis on the protection and care of their cultural assets. Through its award-winning, world-class facilities and public programs, the Department of Cultural Affairs leads the way in New Mexico's efforts to preserve, develop, promote, and provide access to its cultural resources for the use, education and enjoyment of present and future generations.
