Beyond Realism
European Surrealism had an impact on American photographers from early to late modernist periods. Historically,
artists embraced the surrealist manifesto in an attempt to come to terms with the devastating consequences of
the World Wars. Surrealism became an ironic voice. It was a psychological duel between the realist perspective
and the unconscious. Surrealists expressed those profound contradictions found within existing social-political
realities and individual ethics and beliefs. Some of these photographers explored only tangentially such issues
of surrealism during their careers. Others contributed to a continuous outpouring of a surrealist discourse in
contemporary photography.
