Beyond the Medium

Artists transform photography from the modernist past by forging new forms of expression from it—much as the early modern photographers used the tenets of Pictorialism a century ago to establish modern photography. Today, artists continue to move beyond the limitations of the photographic medium. They explore ideas among art mediums, without a shared single style or shared standard. Photographic ideas are central to artists who seek to express the current era of global change, continuing into the twenty-first century.
