Feminism as Ethos
Feminism's greatest contribution to the future of art has probably been precisely its lack of contribution to modernism.
The feminist movement of the 1970s, '80s and '90s proved to be a rich resource and praiseworthy alternative, outside of the hierarchy and exclusive nature of modernism. It offered a strategy more open to critical discourse. Central topics included the environment, ecology, body, and earth art, based upon the sacredness of earth, ecology, gender, economics, life-affirming ethics, demanding that women become more central to artistic discourse. This provided artists with a greater sense of inclusion. They took ideas beyond the limitations of historical modernism.
