 New Mexico Arts

From prehistoric basketweavers to Spanish santeros to members of the Taos Society of Artists, the people of New Mexico have long recognized and cherished their diverse artistic expressions.

This ongoing commitment to cultural integrity has blossomed into a well-recognized profile for New Mexico — one which equates arts and culture with the identity of the state itself.

In establishing New Mexico Arts, the State Legislature appreciated that "the general welfare of the people of this state will be promoted by giving further recognition to the arts as a vital part of our culture and heritage and as an important means of expanding the scope of our educational program."

The goal of New Mexico Arts is to preserve, enhance and develop the arts in New Mexico through partnerships, public awareness and education to enrich the quality of life for present and future generations. The agency accomplishes its mission through the administration of various arts programs and services.

As a funding agency, New Mexico Arts contracts statewide in the areas of Visual Arts, Performing and Literary Arts, and provides technical assistance to artists and arts organizations throughout the state. In addition, the agency administers a 1% for Public Art program in State buildings as well as a Cultural Corridors project which places art alongside the historic El Camino Real and old Route 66.
