New Mexico Arts and the City of Santa Fe Seek Designs for Public Art Project

February 12th, 2020

(Santa Fe, NM) - New Mexico Arts (the state art agency and a division of the state Department of Cultural Affairs) and the Santa Fe Arts and Culture Department are seeking original designs from Santa Fe County residents for a temporary public art project entitled “You Are Here/Estás Aquí: A Public Art Activation Project.”

“You Are Here/Estás Aquí” will feature five original mural designs on 5-by-7-foot vinyl banners chosen by a local selection committee to be placed along fencing surrounding the site of the upcoming New Mexico Museum of Art Vladem Contemporary in the city’s Railyard district. The banners will remain on display for up to 12 months while the museum is under construction.

The mural designs should create a sense of place and celebrate the multicultural heritage of Santa Fe. This project is expected to activate a busy construction zone by expressing the values, cultures and communities of the city, and engage residents and visitors to the area.

Criteria used by the selection committee will include but not limited to: Quality of original design, strength of concept and engagement with project intent, and proposed project’s attention to the culture and history of Santa Fe.

Project amount is $1,000 all-inclusive to include original design and digital image preparation for scaled reproduction on a 5-by-7-foot vinyl banner. All selected artists will be required to enter into a Public Artist Design Agreement with New Mexico Arts. New Mexico Arts will pay for all costs associated with printing and installing the final banners.

The banners will be sufficiently secured against high winds and outdoor conditions; however, they could be subject to damage, vandalism, or theft at any time due to the temporary nature and outdoor setting of the project. New Mexico Arts, Santa Fe Arts and Culture Department, and the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs are not responsible for such occurrences.

The project is open to Santa Fe County residents 18 years old or older. If applying as a team, the lead artist must be at least age 18 but other team members may be younger. Local organizations may submit on behalf of an artist younger than age 18, however the organization will be the contracting party. For applicants younger than age 18, a participation release from a custodial parent and/or guardian is required.

Designs may be submitted online at https://artist.callforentry.org/festivals_unique_info.php?ID=6555. The deadline to submit designs is March 13, 2020. Artists whose designs are chosen will be notified by March 27, 2020.
