SANTA FE – The New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) offers a variety of online educational programs and inspirational events through its museums, historic sites, and cultural institutions. Designed for all ages to be enjoyed at home, these programs and events bring to life New Mexico’s unique culture.

This week’s programming includes three outstanding programs from around the state:

The LatinX Book Review from the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) features New Mexican author Enrique R. Lamadrid’s bilingual children’s book "Amadito and the Hero Children." Weaving stories of the 1918 influenza epidemic and the smallpox epidemics of the early 1800s, the book introduces readers of all ages to the public health issues facing those in New Mexico and the scientific and folk remedies used at the time. The Latinx Book Review blog focuses on books written by LatinX authors of all genres. Reviewers are NHCC staff, NHCC volunteers, and NHCC Book Club members.

Gallery owner, cultural advisor, and author of traditional oral stories Arthur Cruz shares his knowledge of Phioge Pueblo in the second installment of Mesa Talks, a collaborative lecture series between the Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project and Los Luceros Historic Site. Watch video of the talk on the Los Luceros Historic Site Facebook page. Los Luceros is the state’s newest historic site, having been designated in 2019. The 148-acre ranch is located north of Alcalde along the Rio Grande. It is one of New Mexico’s most scenic and historically rich properties. The Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project is a community nonprofit dedicated to the stewardship and preservation of the Mesa Prieta region of the northern Rio Grande Valley.

On Friday, June 12, at 7 p.m. the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum will host the 11th performance of the popular virtual concert series “Our Fair New Mexico,” featuring cowboy musician Kenny Arroyos of Las Cruces. Watch the concert on the museum’s Facebook page. “Our Fair New Mexico” highlights musicians living in New Mexico performing in some DCA’s most beautiful settings. This week’s concert features the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum, an interactive museum which brings to life the 4,000-year history of farming and ranching in New Mexico.

Here are other interesting programs from across the Department:  

• The Blog on the the Museum of International Folk Art website is up and running again with a new series called "Folk Art Piece of the Week," consisting of posts from scholars and museum docents.  

• The Rocketeer Academy In-a-Box summer camp from the New Mexico Museum of Space History has officially launched. Intended for children who’ve completed grades 4-7, the program consists of hour-long interactive online educator-led sessions.  

• View seven online exhibitions – including "Turquoise, Water, Sky: The Stone and Its Meaning," "Touched by Fire," and "Comic Art Indigene" – on the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture website. These exhibitions incorporate themes and ideas related to Native American material culture.
