Photographers David Scheinbaum and Janet Russek will talk about Eliot Porter’s photographs of Glen Canyon, which resulted in the book The Place No One Knew: Glen Canyon on the Colorado and served as one of the exhibition’s original inspirations. A pioneer of color photography, Porter made many visits to Glen Canyon in the 1960s to capture the extraordinary beauty of places that would soon be submerged under Lake Powell. Though his book, published by the Sierra Club, did not stop the building of Glen Canyon Dam, it galvanized interest in environmental activism. The two artists were close friends with Porter and will also share stories he passed on to them.
