MOIFA Celebrates Art as Activism at the Santa Fe Railyard

(Santa Fe, NM)— The Museum of International Folk Art (MOIFA) brings artists from Santa Fe and Lima, Peru together for an event, Celebrating Art, Music, and Activism, at the Santa Fe Railyard on June 29, 2019, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The event features organizations such as Santa Fe’s Alas de Agua Art Collective and Three Sisters Collective, along with Lima’s Amapolay as part of the current exhibition, Community through Making: From Peru to New Mexico (Comunidad a través de la Creación de Perú a Nuevo México).

Featured artists will host a night of art making, live music, food, and family-friendly activities, creating art in service of community. From 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., event attendees will have the option to support local artists at a pop-up market and sample Peruvian cuisine from local vendors, Cuchara del Inca and Sabor Peruano. Activities include live-screen printing for all that bring their own T-shirt (those without T-shirts will be given a free print), making seed balls for planting with Three Sisters Collective, and card-making for our youngest visitors. A free concert will take place from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., beginning with Tesuque Revolt, followed by the evening’s headliner, Novalima.

The exhibition articulates the power of art as activism to heal and build within and across different communities. As a proud member of the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience, MOIFA organized a conversation across borders, pairing New Mexican artists with Peruvian artists for ten-day residencies, addressing both global and regionally specific issues. Those residencies and the projects generated the exhibition on view in the Gallery of Conscience through January 5, 2020.

The International Coalition of Sites of Conscience is a global network connecting past struggles to today’s human rights movements. MOIFA and collaborating artists are proud to host Celebrating Art, Music, and Activism, promoting artistic, civic action and community in Santa Fe.
