MOIFA Presents the Student Art and Design Competition Reception

(Santa Fe, NM)— The Mid-Century Santa Fe collaboration will host a reception presenting the works of the Student Art and Design Competition, which will be on view at the Museum of International Folk Art’s Joan and Clifford Vernick Auditorium from August 1 to August 20, 2019. The reception will take place on Sunday, August 4, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The Student Art and Design Competition pays homage to Lloyd Kiva New (Cherokee), who in addition to being a premier fashion designer of the mid-1900s, was a beloved and nationally recognized professor and director of the Institute of American Indian Arts. Dedicated to educational excellence, New sought to cultivate artists of the Southwest and showcase their talents through the power of teaching. The Student Art and Design Competition celebrates New while honoring his, Georgia O’Keeffe’s, and Alexander Girard’s influence and contributions to New Mexico’s textile, fashion, and visual art landscape.

Featuring winners: Jaida Grey Eagle (Oglala Lakota) in Textiles; Nika Feldman in Fashion; Derayna DeClay (White Mountain Apache) in Visual Art; and John Francis Mustain as Best in Show

The Mid-Century Santa Fe collaboration, May 5 to October 27, 2019, gathers Santa Fe’s masters of modern art and design, Alexander Girard, Lloyd Kiva New, and Georgia O’Keeffe. The partnership between the Museum of International Folk Art, the Institute of American Indian Arts, and the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum explore the artists’ life and influence through exhibitions and community engagement. The Mid-Century Santa Fe 2019 Student Art Competition is partially funded by the City of Santa Fe Arts Commission and the 1% Lodgers’ Tax.
