Will Shuster is best remembered today as the creator of Zozobra, the legendary marionette effigy that burns every fall for the Santa Fe Fiesta. Visitors to this open house will get to see the many sides of Shuster – artist, husband, World War I veteran, friend and all-around merrymaker. The New Mexico Museum of Art owns a comprehensive collection of Shuster’s archives that includes his journals, military records, handwritten letters, photographs of the burning of Zozobra and other documentation of local celebrations Shuster was involved in.

These small alcove galleries are a tradition that dates back more than 100 years to the founding of the New Mexico Museum of Art. Artists from across the state, across media, and in all stages of their career will be featured over the course of a year as part of Alcoves 20/20. At the close of the year of exhibitions, we will have featured new work by thirty artists.   The Alcove exhibitions reaffirm the Museum’s commitment to living artists and to exhibiting and championing contemporary art in New Mexico.
