Popular Culture

Many New Mexico artists have been influenced by the popular culture of the region. While the conventional wisdom asserts that popular imagery mimics high art traditions, Southwestern artists such as Betty Hahn often develop their imagery in response to popular icons. The ironies of much late-twentieth-century art are epitomized by the way Paul Sarkisian mixes modern art strategies with popular subject matter.
