Dance as Art

While local rituals may have captivated painters, photographers and writers at the turn of the last century, it was avant-garde painter Marsden Hartley who first wrote about Pueblo dance as art in "Red Man Ceremonials." Later in the twentieth century, artists such as Fritz Scholder have reinterpreted these icons from a modernist, expressionist perspective.
