Dieter Appelt (German, 1935- )
After WWII, Dieter Appelt and his family returned to their farm to discover the bodies of soldiers decomposing in their fields, an experience that formed the emotional and aesthetic foundation of his work. He performed in the Deutsche Opera Berlin (1961-1979) while studying art. Influenced by Francis Bacon and Fluxus performance artist Joseph Beuys, his "First Hanging" (1976) integrated his obsession with death and decay, personal suffering, and the constructed image. For ten years Appelt collaborated with his wife, Hannah, on photography, films, and performance art. He heads the film, video, and photography department, Berlin Academy of Fine Arts.
