Lewis Baltz (American, 1945- )

Lewis Baltz, a native of Newport Beach, California, received an M.F.A. in photography from the Claremont Graduate School in 1971. He gained prominence in the "New Topographic" movement of the 1970s with such series as "The Tract House" and "The New Industrial Parks," dispassionate records of the desolation and destruction wrought by development in the western United States. He received Guggenheim and NEA fellowships in 1977 and turned his camera to such projects as "Nevada," photographs of the wreckage caused by development in the Nevada desert, and "Park City," a study of housing developments in a bedroom community for Salt Lake City.
