Irene Bayer-Hecht (American, 1898-1991)

Chicago-born Irene Bayer grew up in Hungary and, in 1920, attended the Hochschule fur Bildende Kunst, Berlin. She lived in Paris, from 1923-1924, where she met Læger and Picasso. In 1925, she married Bauhaus instructor Herbert Bayer and studied photography in Leipzig and at Bauhasu-Dessau in order to assist in her husband's photographic work. They separated in 1928, and she moved to Berlin. Her work was included in the 1929 Film und Foto exhibition held in Stuttgart. Bayer returned to the United States in 1938 and gave up photography to work as a translator.
