Michael Berman (American, 1956- )

Michael Berman graduated from Colorado College, Colorado Springs, with a pre-medical degree in biology. He received an M.F.A. in photography from Arizona State University in 1985. Unsatisfied with the landscapes in his thesis, he cut up the negatives and decided to reprint the fragments, which he adhered to zinc plates, covering the surface with paint, crayon, and graphite markings. Today Berman hikes to remote locations in the Southwest to photograph vanishing landscapes with his view camera. By cutting, altering, and reconfiguring his images in a fragmented state, his works represent the new western landscape, one manipulated by American culture.
