Ilse Bing (German, 1899-1998)

Ilse Bing studied art history at Frankfurt University and took up photography to document her Ph.D. dissertation on architecture. She abandoned academia for photojournalism and moved from her native land to Paris, in 1930. Her Leica camera work appeared in Vu, Arts et métiers graphiques, and Photographie, and was included in the Museum of Modern Art's exhibition "Photography, 1893-1937" in New York. Bing and her husband, musicologist Konrad Wolff, were interned in France early in WWII; they emigrated from there to New York in 1941. She quit photography for poetry, drawing, and painting in 1959.
