Vladimir Brylyakov (Russian, 1958- )

Born in Glazov, Russia, Vladimir Brylyakov studied photography at the Culture College. In the 1980s, he directed a Leningrad photography studio and was a cameraman at the Institute of Cinema, Moscow. Since 1986, he has been director of photography at the Lenfilm Studio in St. Petersburg and has won photography awards in Czechoslovakia and West Germany and the Camera d'Or from the Cannes Film Festival. Brylyakov creates unique photographs from straight negatives, abandoning routine chemical processing by painting with developer and chemical toners until only an ephemeral image exists. His abstract works often feature the human figure suspended in various stages of motion, as in film.
