Harry Callahan (American, 1912-1999)
Hired by László Moholy-Nagy at the Chicago Institute of Design in 1946, Harry Callahan was appointed head of the department of photography in 1949. The Detroit native established a graduate photography program at the Rhode Island School of Design in 1961 and retired in 1977. An influential teacher and mentor of many contemporary photographers, Callahan used his formal yet visionary photographs to explain his relationship to life, concentrating on such recurring subjects as his wife, Eleanor, and their daughter, as well as landscapes and cityscapes. The feminine is a central theme of Callahan's deceptively straightforward portraits, nudes, and landscapes.
