Henri Cartier-Bresson (French, 1908- )
Henri Cartier-Bresson is best known for his photographs of the "decisive moment," that particular moment when meaning and composition combine to make an image at once significant and beautiful. Their apparent spontaneity, however, belies his careful attention to formal composition and design. With his Leica, Cartier-Bresson, who was born in Chanteloup, France, witnessed (and documented) many historical events including the Nazi occupation of France and the liberation of Paris, the last months of the Kuomintang and the first six months of the People's Republic of China, and the independence of Indonesia and the Soviet Union after the end of the Stalin era. He helped found the Magnum photographic agency in 1947.
