Jaromír Funke (Czechoslovakian, 1896-1945)
Influenced by Frantisek Drtikol, Jaromír Funke began exploring the intellectual and photographic possibilities of cubism, consructivism, and expressionism in 1919. A leading member of the Czech avant-garde during the 1920s and 1930s, Funke had ties with the "Devetsil" artist's association, which championed constructivism and poetism. In 1931, he began teaching in Bratislava and Prague and was an influential mentor, writer, and exhibitions organizer for fourteen years. He and friend Joseph Ehm risked their lives by continuing to edit and publish the avant-garde journal Photographic Horizon for more than two years after Czechoslovakia fell under Nazi occupation.
