Ralph Gibson (American, 1939- ) Ralph Gibson was born in Los Angeles and began studying photography during his five years with the U.S. Navy. He later studied at the San Francisco Art Institute, where he was an assistant to Dorothea Lange, and, a few years after that, assisted Robert Frank. By 1986, Gibson had received a Guggenheim Fellowship and his third NEA Fellowship. He received his Doctor of Fine Arts from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1997. Gibson photographs in black and white and in color. In the series of images he creates, sequencing is vital and evokes sensations beyond the visual, rewarding the eye, mind, and soul. Joyce Roetter
