Florence Henri (American, 1893-1982)

Florence Henri pursued painting in Berlin during WWI. In 1924, the New York native married a Swiss national and moved to Paris, where her circle included Arp, Moholy-Nagy, Lissitsky, Læger, Mondrian, and Gropius. In 1927, she studied painting and photography at the Bauhaus and was influenced by Lucia Moholy and Lásló Moholy-Nagy. Her Cubist portraits, self-portraits and still lifes were distinguished by their innovative use of mirrors. Henri's work was exhibited in "Film und Foto," Stuttgart, 1929. During the 1970s, she reprinted earlier work and supervised the enlargement of her most famous images.
