Nikolai Kulebiakin (Russian, 1959- )

Nikolia Kulebiakin (also Kulebyakin) attended the Mossoviet Polytechnical Institute in the 1970s. There, he was exposed to the artistic ferment in the Soviet Union, particularly in Moscow, that swirled around amateurs entering photography from such professions as engineering, physics, and mathematics. Also influenced by Russian photography at the turn of the twentieth century and the American f/64 Group, Kulebyakin began exhibiting internationally in 1988. His work shows an evolution from simple, "upbeat messages" to gelatin silver images echoing themes of the 1930s European avant-garde, to more current conceptual color collages.
