Ted Kuykendall (American, 1953- )

Ted Kuykendall attended New Mexico Military Institute and assisted sculptor Luis Jimenez at the Artist-in-Residence Program in Roswell, New Mexico. Influenced by Frank's The Americans, the Roswell native began photographing his hometown, making connections with the landscape of his unhappy childhood. He studied photography at the University of New Mexico for a year and was influenced by Joel-Peter Witkin. As artist-in-residence himself in Roswell, for eighteen months, Kuykendall used chance and free-association to combine found objects and photographic prints in more than 200 staged, studio constructions. His oversized photographs, onto which he painted various toners, were powerful explorations of painful childhood memories. Kuykendall currently works in construction and ranching.
