Aleksandras Macijauskas (Lithuanian, 1938- )

Aleksandras Macijauskas, a milling-machine operator, joined the Kaunas Photography Club, in his Lithuanian hometown, in 1964. He became staff photographer for the Evening News in 1967 and during weekends began his unsanctioned series The Village Market, photographs revealing true aspects of country life in Soviet Lithuania. The state hired him to establish the Photographic Art Society of Lithuania in the 1970s and finally recognized his talent after his work appeared in Czechoslovakia's Revue Fotographie and was exhibited in an international competition in Slovakia. His wide-angle photographs of rural markets, veterinary clinics, demonstrations, and funerals reveal the repressive soviet atmosphere via the universalities of life and death.
