Laurent Millet (French, 1968- )

Laurent Millet's constructed landscapes include homemade traps and wooden cages that are odd and anachronistic. Two of his projects, Petites machines littorales (Small Coastal Machines) and Wind Traps, were photographed using either a camera obscura made from a trailer with a pinhole for an aperture or a nineteenth-century view camera. His work has a bygone quality accentuated by the selenium, tea, and walnut staining of the prints. Millet often appears with his "wind traps" as an Everyman, grappling canvas and branches blowing in the wind. His work, rooted in landscape and history, blurs the boundaries of photography, sculpture, drawing, theater, and documentation.
