Yevgenni Mokhorev (Russian, 1987- )
Since 1987, Yevgenni Mokhorev has created a large body of work concerning the life of children in St. Petersburg. His interiors and street scenes combine a documentary approach with staged depictions of everyday reality, resulting in work that is both ironic and metaphorical. In the street, for example, Mokhorev juxtaposes the city's decaying European architecture with dispossessed, ragged children. Wearing western clothes and resting on graffiti-covered walls, they demonstrate both the assimilation of western culture and the difficult realities of a new, evolving Russia.
