Susan Rankaitis (American, 1949- )

Susan Rankaitis received her M.F.A. in painting and photography from the University of Southern California in 1977, where she was influenced by the theories and experiments of Maholy-Nagy and Ray. Her large-scale abstractions explore scientific theory, technological development and biology and feature such recurring motifs as the double-helix, airplanes, and rockets appropriated from the media. Rankaitis employs selective development and toning, bleaching, washes, multiple negatives, painting, and collage to enhance her work. She has received the 1985 Graves Award in the Humanities and two NEA fellowships, and is the Fletcher Jones Chair in Art at Scripps College, Claremont, California.
