Holly Roberts (American, 1951- )

Holly Roberts, born in Santa Fe, New Mexico, earned an M.F.A. from Arizona State University, Tempe, in 1981. Trained in printmaking and lithography, Roberts created collages of ready-made materials and began taking photography classes to work from photos of her own. She also studied painting and began to collage her photographs directly onto canvas. Today, Roberts works intuitively, obscuring all but the figures in her photographs, allowing them to float in the surrounding paint. Her metamorphic beings illustrate archetypal emotional or dream states; her selective use of color further supplements the symbolism of her universal subject matter.
