Franz Roh (German, 1890-1965)

Franz Roh was an assistant to art historian Heinrich Wolfflin, in 1918, and became an art critic and historian of photography and film. Encouraged by Moholy-Nagy, he pursued photography from 1927-1933, producing negative prints and other experimental works. In 1929, he co-edited Foto-Auge, a critical record of the "Film und Foto" exhibition. Following WWII, Roh taught modern art history at the University of Munich. He was the first president of Germany's International Association of Art Critics (1951) and founder of the Society of Friends of Modern Art (1954).
