Michal Rovner (Israeli, 1957- )
Michal Rovner, a New York-based artist, explores the borders of places, ideas, and media through video, film, and photography. Her site-specific installations along the Israel-Lebanon border feature digital images of amorphous figures, which she prints on murals to suggest both loss and survival. Field I, a recent project, was a large-screen video projection filmed both in the Negev desert and a New York snowstorm. Shown at the 2000 Whitney Biennial, it featured ghostly figures forging a path in an abstract landscape. These faceless wanderers, whose identities transcend time or nationality, draw the viewer into the pathos of an existential and abstract exile.
