Meridel Rubenstein (American, 1948- )

Meridel Rubenstein, born in Detroit, Michigan, was educated at Sarah Lawrence College and did special graduate studies at M.I.T. with Minor White; she received an M.F.A. from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, in 1977. Her work is usually multipartite and layered, offering multiple viewpoints on a subject or place, interweaving disparate realities. She intertwines history, culture, and myth with the threatened natural landscape, using a variety of photographic processes as well as video and sound installations. Rubenstein has taught photography at the University of New Mexico and the University of San Francisco, and currently teaches at Boston College.
