Edmund Teske (American, 1911-1996)
In his youth, Edmund Teske studied drawing, painting, saxophone, and piano, while pursuing photography on his own. He became a piano protégé of Ida Lustgarten, who hoped he would become a concert pianist. Teske met Stieglitz and Frank Lloyd Wright, and was selected as the first photography fellow at Taliesen, Wright's unique teaching community for design. He later moved to Los Angeles and found community with Aline Barnsdall, Wright's client, at her Hollyhock House. Elements of personal history, family, surrealism, theater, literature, music, and Vedanta philosophy are found in his photographs. Sandwiched negatives and "duotone solarization" enhance his complex emotional and literate prints.
