UMBO (German, 1902-1980)
UMBO (the name Otto Umbehr adopted in 1924) studied art, theater, and film during the ferment of the 1920s in Germany, where he attended the Weimar Bauhaus. Like László Moholy-Nagy and Citroen, he became an innovator by working with all aspects of the medium, including the use of found photographs in photomontage and photocollage. His experimented with surrealist interests by combining real with enigmatic subjects. UMBO continued in portrait, documentary, and advertising photography, beginning in the late 1920s when he opened his studio in Berlin.
