From the Avant-Garde

Avant-garde art a century ago remains a primary source of current innovation in photographic expression. Many of the avant-garde experiments included photography as well as applications with a variety of other materials and media. Experiments in mass media, photomontage, and the printed page helped to lay some of the groundwork for today's use of digital technologies. Innovations by Alexander Rodchenko, Varvara Stepanova, four generations of their Family, and others illustrate a lineage of experimentation that stretches from modern art history into the twenty-first century.
