Click Here: Community Through Making, New Mexico’s History with Viruses, Attracting Birds at Home, and More

November 17th, 2020

Explore the latest online programming from the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), bringing the state’s unique blend of cultures into your home through its museums, historic sites, and cultural institutions.

This week includes three outstanding programs:

A new online exhibit is available on the Museum of International Folk Art website. “Community Through Making: From Peru to New Mexico” brings together New Mexican and Peruvian artists as they explore how art shapes healthy and vibrant communities. The installation was the result of conversations across borders, highlighting three collaborative projects that paired local artists and artists from Peru for 10-day residencies in conjunction with the Museum’s past exhibition “Crafting Memory: The Art of Community in Peru.”

The History and Literary Arts program at the National Hispanic Cultural Center will host a virtual talk by State Historian Rob Martinez called “Masks On! Pandemics and Epidemics in New Mexico History,” as part of the ongoing lecture series “Tertulia Histórica Albuquerque.” Martinez will examine how viruses and diseases have shaped New Mexico’s history, taking a closer look at how epidemics and pandemics have impacted the state through the centuries. This free online event will take place at 2 p.m. MST on November 21 via Zoom. Click here to register.

Attract birds to your home this holiday season. Learn the ingredients to make suet and build a suet feeder using common household products in the latest Quick Trip video now available on the Sandia Mountain Natural History Center YouTube channel, in partnership with the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science.

Here are other interesting programs from across the Department:

   •   On the New Mexico Museum of Space History Facebook page, visitors can watch a video featuring museum educator Julie Bryant as she demonstrates which common household items sink and which ones float in water.

   •   With the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum’s postponement this year of its annual food show "HomeGrown,” the museum instead will have a series of posts on its Facebook page featuring some of the regular vendors for the show. Look for these new posts beginning on November 20.

   •   Are you looking for art projects to complete at home? The New Mexico Museum of Art website offers multiple virtual activity workbooks for all ages put together by the museum’s education team.

More information related to social media and online resources for each division of DCA, including photos, is available upon request.
