Winter 2021 El Palacio Magazine Explores Folk Dress in Scandinavia, History of Lamy Branch Railroad, and much more

December 8th, 2021

The Winter 2021 issue of El Palacio magazine, the official publication of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs, has been shipped and is currently live at www.elpalacio.org.

This edition of the oldest museum magazine in the United States features an in-depth look at exhibitions across state museums, as well as deep dives into various aspects of New Mexico’s history. The cover feature is a detailed look at the cultural and political implications of folk dress in Scandinavia as inspired by the Museum of International Folk Art’s Dressing with Purpose exhibition; from there, learn more about the history of the Lamy Branch railroad, what photo archives can tell us about race relations in New Mexico’s history, profiles of the poets featured in the New Mexico Museum of Art’s Poetic Justice exhibition, and much more.

All content in this current issue, as well as full archives dating back to the magazine’s founding, is available at www.elpalacio.org.

About El Palacio     El Palacio was first published in 1913, one year after New Mexico reached statehood. The name of the magazine — “the palace” — refers to the Palace of the Governors, the first museum in what historically is referred to as the Museum of New Mexico, established in 1909, eventually reorganized under the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. El Palacio covers art, culture, and history of the Southwest, with emphasis on the exhibitions, research, and programs of the state museums, historic sites, and cultural institutions of New Mexico. For more information, email elpalacio@state.nm.us.
