National Hispanic Cultural Center History & Literary Arts October Readings & Book-signings

(Albuquerque, New Mexico) – The National Hispanic Cultural Center History and Literary Arts Program has three events coming up in October: a call to action talk on climate change, and two readings and book-signings. All are free events held on the NHCC campus.

Reading and book signing: Sacred Seeds, by The Honorable Mari-Luci Jaramillo, U.S. Ambassador to Honduras in the 1970s

This collection of 32 coming of age stories by Mari-Luci Jaramillo, former US Ambassador to Honduras, recounts life on a remote ranch in the 1930s in northern New Mexico. What do you do if money is scarce and your father is even more scarce? You’ll walk with your mother on a twelve-mile cross-country journey to a remote ranchito. There, your abuelos just might know the way forward. The book features family photographs and sketches by Cecilia J. Navarrete.

Talk: “At the Intersection of Cultural Heritage and Climate Change: A Call to Action”

Theresa Cardenas, Founder of Noble Renewables Group of the West and Chair of the Middle Rio Grande Water Advocates, discusses the historic impact of climate change on cultural heritage in New Mexico. Is New Mexico prepared to face the unprecedented, systemic threat to people and their cultural heritage? Cardenas holds a Bachelor’s of University Studies degree from the University of New Mexico and a graduate degree from Harvard University, John F. Kennedy School of Government, in Executive Education in Leadership, Organizing and Action.

Reading and Book-signing: Refugees, Rivers & Rebels with Renny Golden and Poets Demetria Martinez, Margaret Randall, NM State Senor Bill O’Neill and Damien Flores.

Renny Golden’s book of poems, The Music of Her Rivers, pays homage to the rivers that taught the poet—the Rio Grande and Chicago and Illinois Rivers. Sharp-eyed and empathetic, Golden serves as a witness, documenting place, history and people, especially those left voiceless due to violence or discrimination. Joining Golden are four New Mexico poets whose poems serve as impassioned calls for social justice.
