March Performances at National Hispanic Cultural Center

(Albuquerque, New Mexico) — The National Hispanic Cultural Center performing arts offerings this month include performances from the Revolutions International Theatre Festival March 14, 27 and 28, and Yjastros 36: El Fuego Fatuo March 13 and 14.

On Friday, March 13, at 7 p.m. in the Bank of America Theatre, Uganda’s Ndere presents And Then…? as part of Revolutions. Led by its world-renowned founder and director Dr. Rwangyezi Stephen, Ndere is a cultural development organization specializing in Ugandan traditional music, dance, and drama and boasting a repertoire of more than 40 different dances, hundreds of songs, and a wide variety of instruments.  Produced by Tricklock Company, the Revolutions International Theatre Festival welcomes performance companies from all over the globe to perform and connect across cultures and communities. $27 w/ $9 discount for students, seniors and NHCC members.

The Albuquerque Journal Theatre is where Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company presents Yjastros 36: El Fuego Fatuo Friday, March 13, and Saturday, March 14. Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday, and 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday.

El Fuego Fatuo is a dynamic display of flamenco’s possibilities framed through Spanish composer Manuel de Falla’s famous work “El Fuego Fatuo”—referring to the persistent fire that is the spirit of flamenco. With world premiere choreography and invited artists including Sevilla’s world-famous flamenco cantaora (singer) Esperanza Fernández and the musical group Revózo led by Vicente Griego and César Bauvallet (Son Como Son), El Fuego Fatuo is a dazzling display of flamenco and stunning musical compositions. The interplay among expressive interpretations of de Falla’s work through the vehicles of both dance and music give audiences access to flamenco’s power to evoke profound emotions and connect us all. $30, $40, $50, $60 w/ $5 discount for students, seniors and NHCC members.

On Friday, March 27, at 9:30 p.m., the Revolutions International Theatre Festival continues in the Bank of America Theatre with the Free Speech Comedy Arts Series featuring John Fugelsang. Fugelsang is a comedian featured on SiriusXM, The Sexy Liberal Comedy Tour, MSNBC & CNN. He returns to Revolutions with his brilliant and hilarious insights on the world in this stand-up comedy special. He is in Albuquerque for one night only to celebrate 20 years of Revolutions with his irreverent comedy including special guests, Albuquerque favorites Rusty Rutherford and Sarah Kennedy. $27 w/ $9 discount for students, seniors and NHCC members. 

And Saturday, March 28, at 5 p.m. in the Bank of America Theatre, the Revolutions performances conclude with writers/performers/hip-hop artists Idris Goodwin and Brian Quijada, as they solve the nation’s biggest problems with beats, rhymes, and real talk in The Solution Mixtape. Through their autobiographical work, woven with humor, heart, and piercing commentary, they join forces to tackle issues of immigration, race, masculinity, and gender. Built on Quijada’s live soundscapes, created on the spot, they tell stories and share poems designed to spark meaningful conversation with the audience. Throughout the performance, they share the mic with the community and facilitate a collective conversation and brainstorming on how we can collectively name and use our privilege for progress.
