The Bartlett Library and Archives Presents the Open House Exhibit Series

(Santa Fe, NM)— The Bartlett Library and Archives invites the public to several open house events throughout the summer and fall at the Museum of International Folk Art (MOIFA). Each event has been organized into mini-exhibits, presenting collections to those interested in folklore, arts, and cultural traditions. The Bartlett Library Open House series begins on June 2, 2019, with Girard Before the Wing, paired with MOIFA’s Alexander Girard exhibitions currently on view. The events continue on August 4, October 6, and December 1 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Museum Library.

Since first opening its doors in 1953, MOIFA’s library has developed unique collections and research services for its curators and research associates, and extends these resources to students, scholars, and the public at large. The open house events and pop-up exhibits will take place on the first Sunday of each month, allowing New Mexico residents free access to the museum.

 

Girard Before the Wing

Date: June 2, 2019

Before Alexander and Susan Girard donated their personal folk art collection in 1978, Alexander Girard exhibited his works and collections with MOIFA. This pop-up exhibit takes a look at Girard’s history with the museum, adding another dimension to MOIFA’s comprehensive look the Mid-Century Modern designer’s life and work.

 

Bartlett Book Sale

Date: August 4, 2019

Time: 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Location: Bartlett Library and Archives, Museum of International Folk Art

 

The Bartlett Library will host a book sale in August, selling items sure to appeal to folk art collectors, scholars, and enthusiasts.   All proceeds from the sale will support new acquisitions and programs of the Bartlett Library.

 

The Art of Gravestone Rubbings

Date: October 6, 2019

Time: 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Location: Bartlett Library and Archives, Museum of International Folk Art

 

In advance of the folk art-rich holiday Día de los Muertos, the Bartlett Library and Archives presents an exhibit focused on the art of gravestone rubbing, a practice used to record images of stone carvings. The exhibit will feature original rubbings from New England cemeteries by Ann Parker and Avon Neal, whose work was seen in a 1969 MOIFA exhibit.

 

The Yōkai Library

Date: December 1, 2019

Time: 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Location: Bartlett Library and Archives, Museum of International Folk Art

In conjunction with MOIFA’s forthcoming exhibition, the library will acquaint museum visitors with the monsters of Yōkai: Japanese Ghosts and Demons. Both comical and terrifying, the creatures on view created a visual narrative that helped 14^th to 16^th-century people explain the unexplainable. Many of these narratives live on through today’s modern pop culture in television shows like Pokémon.

The museum and library present the open house pop-up exhibits, allowing those with an interest in cultural histories a chance to explore Bartlett Library and Archives resources. Join the museum and library through the summer and fall for a peek into its collections and the world folk art.
